Joseph Tamale Mirundi who has been a seasoned political analyst and former Presidential Press Secretary, died on Tuesday night. He left behind a controversial, special and very personal wish for his funeral.
Just like his controversial nature, this wish is also controversial, much like his character. Mirundi said that a two-day vigil should be held at each of his three marital residences Zana, Kabalagala, and Kyengera to honor his life.
Well it seems like his farewell will be as memorable just like his life has been. Additionally, Mirundi had a clear request for these vigils: They shouldn’t be depressed or sad. Rather, he desired them to be happy occasions; get-togethers where loved ones, friends, and well-wishers assemble, exchange tales, and pay tribute to his memory in the same audacious and unreserved manner that he lived.
The main event of these vigils was the butchering of a cow at each home, which Mirundi meant to serve as a feast for all in attendance. It was his way of making sure that those who came to pay their respects would do so with full bellies and hearts, enveloped in the comfort of fellowship and the common delight of a meal.
Apparently, Tamale Mirundi wanted to leave behind a legacy of richness and community, which is reflected in this last act of kindness instead of one of sadness. Furthermore, Mirundi intended for these vigils to be open to the public, taking place in the marketplaces and streets as well as inside his residences.
He desired his life to be publicly and loudly celebrated, in keeping with the way he had lived never one to run from the limelight, always willing to interact with the people. His dying hope was that these get-togethers would be lively, funny, and full of the tales that shaped his legendary character.
Finally, he intended his burial grounds to be in Kalisizo district.
